It is a few years now since Emmanuel and Elmers End held a joint Burns Supper but plans are well advanced to hold a Burns Festival Celebration next year (the 260th anniversary of the Bard’s birth).
Although Robert Burns was born on 25th January (1759) our supper will be held at Emmanuel a few days before the actual anniversary on Saturday 19th January 2019.
Tickets for the celebrated Emmanuel & Elmers End Burns Supper will be on sale (from me) from 1st December. Tickets are priced £20 per person and the proceeds on the evening will be shared between “Young Minds” and “Brain Tumour Research.” Two charities dear to us at Emmanuel.
A delicious four course meal will be served and there will be the usual entertainment with piper, toasts and songs as well as Scottish dancing. I am grateful to Sue Beynon and the catering team for organising the food for this event.
Please buy your tickets as soon as you can as numbers are restricted by the size of the Richmond Hall.
“And deep this thought impressed my mind
through all his works abroad,
the heart benevolent and kind
the most resembles God.” (Robert Burns 1759-1796)
As you will have seen from recent church magazine articles Marion and I are planning to lead a party to see the famous Passion Play in Oberammergau in the summer of 2020. This is organised by McCabe’s Pilgrimages with whom we have travelled many times in the past. The dates of our visit are 31st July—7th August 2020. The play has been performed every 10 years by the people of this small German town since 1634 in gratitude for their deliverance from the plague which devastated Europe at the time.
Our trip will include 5 days in the Austrian Tyrol prior to the climax of our journey – the Passion Play. We will spend the final two nights in Oberammergau itself. We shall be visiting among other places, the beautiful city of Salzburg made famous by its associations with Mozart and “The Sound of Music.” We shall also be visiting Berchtesgaden set in one of the most scenic parts of the Bavarian Alps where Hitler had his mountain retreat – the Berghof (Eagle’s nest). The brochures and booking forms giving full details are now available from Marion or myself. Unfortunately this trip is now full.
If you have any questions please do speak to Marion or myself.
Estimated Passion Play 2020 Timeline:
Beginning of 2018: Start sales of packages *
Ash Wednesday 2019: The “Hair Decree” – from this date on all the men in Oberammergau taking part in the play are requested to let the hair on their heads and faces grow *
April 2019: Leading actors are chosen for the play
* May – September 2020: The 42nd Passion Play takes place
Sunday 9th December 12:30pm
