Thoughts

I have just been to the funeral of a friend Andrew Forde who has been battling cancer for the last three years. I worked with him for five years before he had to stop work. We had lots in common with shared interests in maths, science, computing and the church. I wish I had known him even better.

Here is a poem he wrote back in February 2008

Search In Time

galaxy

I look to the heavens and find uncountable stars,
Scattered galaxies and this tiny planet of ours.
I know you are there in the vastness of space.
But you I cannot see.

atom

I look into the atom and quanta of light,
Particles fleeting and uncertain in their flight.
I know you are there in the infinitesimally small.
But you I cannot see.

music

I listen to symphonies, perhaps music’s the key,
Existing on paper as well as in memory.
I know you are there in these ephemeral sounds.
But you I cannot see.

Math

I study equations, and ponder the infinite.
The maths helps to grasp it just for a minute.
I know you are there behind these patterns of symbols.
But you I cannot see.

mountain

In the trees, in the mountains, in the streams, in the rain,
In the dawn, in the dusk, across that African plain.
I know you are there in the beauty of it all.
But you I cannot see.

nuke

Them, in the wars, and the bombs, and the dreadful mess
Of our hatred, and greed to get more and give less.
I know you are there in the midst of our folly.
But you I cannot see.

greed

There are earthquakes, famine, illness and flood,
There’s responsibility to take here too, for this loss of blood.
I know you are there when life seems so unfair.
But you I cannot see.

choice

There’s a freedom and choice given to us all.
Freedom given to nature too, else it won’t work at all.
I know you are there when those freedoms are claimed.
But you I cannot see.

laugh

I look at my friends and my family.
A loving wife’s hug, children laughing with glee.
I know you are there in both good times and bad.
But you I cannot see.

search

The search is a long and difficult one.
And instinct tells me time is almost done.

lighttrick

I suspect that time will turn out to be,
Just a trick of the light separating you from me.
I know you are there in all that there is.
But you I soon will see.

Andrew Forde
